DHARWAD: Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Crime) R. Dileep has opined that moral education will pave the way for the transformation of convicts into law abiding citizens. Inaugurating a seminar on Moral Education organised by the State Information Department at the Central Prison here on Thursday, he said the prisoners were the “victims of accidents and misfortune.” The only way the convicts could come out of the “mental prison” was to get moral education, which would also strengthen their inner self in leading a normal life after serving the sentence, he said. Shivanand Shettar, Head, Gandhian Studies, Karnatak University, Dharwad, elaborated on the ways of transforming one’s personality, attitude and approach towards society. He spoke at length on the Gandhian values, which, he said, would show the way for purgation of one’s inner self. Presiding over the inaugural function, Superintendent of the Prison T.H. Laxminarayan said the Department would organise more programmes aimed at transforming convicts.
