Seeking justice: Members of Samajwadi Party Hubli-Dharwad Mahanagar Zilla Unit staging a protest in Hubli on Thursday.
HUBLI: Members of Karnataka Pradesh Samajwadi Party’s Hubli-Dharwad Mahanagar Zilla unit took out a protest march and staged a “rasta roko” demonstration here on Thursday to protest against the delay in the implementation of the Kalasa Banduri Nala Project. The march, led by Govindraj Harivan, Qutubuddin Khaji, Moulana Ismail Kasme, Mallikarjun Sindhagi and others, passed through the thoroughfares of the city before culminating at the Kittur Channamma Circle. The protesters burnt an effigy of United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi for her reported statement on the diversion of Mahadayi waters, which they said, had cast an adverse impact on the implementation of the project. Addressing the protestors, Govindraj Harivan, criticised the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders for indulging in mudslinging over the issue. He also criticised Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda for “neglecting” the project. The other speakers said both the BJP and the Congress were guilty of obstructing the progress of the project. While the then BJP-led National Democratic Alliance Government had kept the in-principle clearance to the project “in abeyance,” now Ms. Gandhi had meted out injustice to the State by making an irresponsible statement, they said. The protestors then submitted a memorandum addressed to the President of India urging him to intervene in the matter.
