BIJAPUR: Members of various organisations under the banner of Gram Swaraj Andolan of Bijapur held a protest here on Thursday opposing the Karnataka Panchayati Raj Amendment Act, 2007, that seeks to curtail the power of gram sabhas in selecting beneficiaries of Ashraya and other subsidised housing schemes. The protesters took out a procession in the city before they squatted in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. CPI State Secretary Siddanagouda Patil and office-bearers of different organisations who spoke on the occasion urged Governor T.N. Chaturvedi to reject the Bill.
