Fake FIRs being lodged, alleges SP

Party demands white paper on FIRs filed in past one-and-a-half months

Lucknow: Alleging police atrocities on its workers following a government order allowing persons whose FIRs were not registered in past three years to lodge them in a month, Samajwadi Party on Thursday demanded a white paper on the number of FIRs filed in the past one-and-a-half months.

Raising the matter in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council during Zero Hour through an adjournment notice, Leader of the Opposition Ahmad Hasan claimed that his party workers were “victimised” and “fake FIRs” were registered against them to “settle political scores”.

Mr. Hasan said that FIRs were being lodged against party workers who did not even have any criminal history.

Attempts were on to list MLA Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya as a member of inter zone-232 gang, which had 105 members according to police, SP member Yashwant Singh alleged adding, though Pratapgarh was not among the 16 dacoit-infested districts, police were trying to “victimise” Raja Bhaiya.

Another Samajwadi Party member Ram Asrey Vishwakrma alleged that under the Mayawati regime there was an “undeclared emergency” in the State and police action was on against over 1,000 party workers by lodging FIRs against them.

Leader of the House Swami Prasad Maurya said action was only taken against those involved in criminal activities.

“No one is victimised in our regime but those who were involved in criminal activities will not be spared, irrespective of the party they belong to,” Mr. Maurya said.

Rejecting the adjournment notice, Chairman of the House Sukhram Singh Yadav directed the government to ensure that the recent government order was not “misused”. The Council adopted a resolution congratulating Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams.
