SALEM: The Government has allotted Rs. 338 crore for providing adequate infrastructure facilities to Government middle and high schools in rural areas in the State this year, Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam has said. Inaugurating the higher secondary section in Konagapadi Government Higher Secondary School, which was upgraded recently, near here on Wednesday, the Minister said that the Government also allotted Rs. 150 crore for constructing laboratories for schools in rural areas this year. A sum of Rs. 1.23 crore was set aside for providing special coaching and to improve various skills of students in Salem, Viluppuram, Thiruvallur and Perambalur districts. Mr. Arumugam said that the Government had decided to upgrade 100 middle schools in the State into high schools and 80 high schools into higher secondary schools in this academic year. Later, he declared open the classrooms and laboratory in Mecheri Government Boys HSS constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.25 crore . He inaugurated classrooms constructed under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in Mecheri Government Girls HSS and panchayat union primary schools in Seeramaniyur, Chinna Aranganur, Nariyanur, Keeraikaranur and Mecheri. Participating in another function, the Minister inaugurated the classrooms constructed in Vellalapatti Government HSS and Thekkampatti Government High School. The Minister handed over free colour television sets to 2,698 beneficiaries.
