LUCKNOW: Thirty-two people have died of encephalitis in the eastern region of Uttar Pradesh since January this year, State Minister for Medical Education Lalji Verma told the Legislative Assembly on Thursday. Replying to an adjournment notice moved by a BJP member, he said 108 cases of encephalitis were reported since the beginning of the year, while 32 have died of the disease in nine districts of the eastern region. As many as 476 people had died of encephalitis in the region last year, he said. The Minister said the Government had made a work-plan and taken all necessary precautionary measures to combat the affliction which strikes after the rainy season in the districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Nearly 95 lakh children between one and 15 years of age had been vaccinated against the disease since the beginning of the year, Mr. Verma added. An encephalitis ward and the viral research centre are being constructed in Gorakhpur, he told the House. Mr. Verma said ORS packets were distributed to the affected people and chlorine tablets dropped into wells. – PTI.
