Panchayat chief, public observe fast

KARAIKAL: The president and ward members of Varichikudi panchayat in Kottucherry commune panchayat in Karaikal, along with the local people, observed fast in front of the Varichikudi panchayat office on Thursday urging the Government to grant funds and powers to the panchayat. S.P. Selvashanmugham, convener of Karaikal Struggle Group, said that the panchayat president ward members were simply go to panchayat office for the name sake and could do nothing.

Mr. Selvashanmugham pointed out that the panchayat was yet to get powers and funds even after the civic elections conducted in July last.
