Municipal workers stage demonstration

Puducherry: Members of the AITUC-led Joint Action Committee of municipality and commune panchayat workers staged a demonstration in front of the Chief Secretariat here on Thursday under V.S. Abishegam, general secretary of the joint committee.

The agitators demanded among other things immediate implementation of the assurances the Chief Minister had given a few days ago.

The demands included payment of risk allowance of Rs.750 a sanitary worker, extension of benefits of Assured Career Progression to those who had put in long years of service, regularisation of workers who had put in minimum of two years service either on daily wages or engaged on temporary basis and payment of stitching charges at Rs.400 a pair of dresses.

The agitators carried pickets and shouted slogans that there was an unnecessary delay on the part of the Local Administration Department in implementing the promises the Chief Minister had given to the workers.
