Doctors, experts from NGOs train them 526 instances of suicides during 2006
Puducherry: With an increase in number of persons attempting suicides in the Union Territory, the Women’s Commission has come forward to ensure that there is timely intervention to prevent the incidence. As part of its efforts, the Commission has launched a programme to train 50 volunteers and counsellors, who would meet people seeking counselling. Doctors from the Government General Hospital in Puducherry and experts from non- governmental organisations from Chennai were training the volunteers. Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy, who inaugurated the programme at the Education Department complex here on Thursday, lauded the Commission’s efforts to prevent the incidence in the Union Territory. Chairman of the Oulgaret Municipality N.S.J. Jayabal, Director of the Department of Child and Women Development Chand Sultana, legislator R. Viswanathan and municipal councillor S. Sibi participated. Chairperson of the Women’s Commission S. Kamalini told newsmen later that the training programme was the first step in the Commission’s efforts to prvent suicides. She said that the Union Territory reported 526 instances of suicides during 2006. The persons now undergoing training would be available for those seeking counselling and the Commission operated a helpline for the people in distress. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy will distribute certificates on Friday to the volunteers.
