DHARWAD: Writer Channaveer Kanavi has regretted that although the nation formulated a policy of earmarking six per cent of the Gross Domestic Product for education a decade ago, its expenditure towards education had not crossed even 3 per cent of GDP. He was speaking after inaugurating the convention of the Representatives of Primary School Teachers Credit Cooperative Societies of Belgaum Division at the District Institute of Education and Training here on Thursday. The veteran poet observed that successive Governments had failed to identify the priorities and also failed to recognise the educational and social needs. Globalisation had worsened the situation resulting in the commercialisation of the education system, he added. He said changing the education system into a system that was favourable to the common man and bringing about comprehensive changes in the system was the need of the hour. M.S. Patil, Assistant Director, Department of Public Instruction, presided over the function. Academics Shivashankar Hiremath, S.T. Bagalkot, M.S. Badami, G.R. Kencharadder and others were present. Representatives of the societies from Belgaum, Uttar Kannada, Haveri, Gadag, Dharwad, Chikkodi, Bagalkot, Bijapur participated in the convention.
