Alappuzha to be declared ‘Total Banking District’

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: Alappuzha will be declared a ‘Total Banking District’ along with other districts on June 30, when the State itself will be declared the country’s first Total Banking State.

The efforts to see “each and every household” in the district being holders of at least one savings bank account are almost over with 1.66 lakh new accounts opened in 83 villages of the district. The actual aim was to complete the campaign in November last, but the efforts hit a roadblock with the chikungunya outbreak in the district last year, Lead District Manager K. Balasubrahmanian told reporters here on Thursday.

As many as 1.05 lakh of the new accounts are zero balance accounts, he said, adding that the campaign was as per the instructions of the Reserve Bank of India to involve people from all walks in life into the banking spectrum. The usual procedural formalities were minimised and 283 branches of 30 banks were involved in the campaign.
