ALAPPUZHA: The Kerala Pradesh Karshaka Congress Committee will stage a dharna in front of the Secretariat on Friday, demanding the State Government to immediately address the problems being faced by farmers in the State. Announcing this at a press conference here on Thursday, Karshaka Congress Committee president Lal Varghese Kalpakavadi, DCC president A.A. Shukoor and Karshaka Congress district president Munjinattu Ramachandran said the recent controversy between the Kerala State Farmers Debt Relief Commission and Agriculture Minister Mullakara Ratnakaran had showed how sincere the Government was about its promises to farmers. Alleging that the Commission was constituted without proper homework and that the factional differences with the Left Democratic Front were now spilling out into the agriculture sector as well, the Karshaka Congress said the Commission should be dismantled if it was not allowed to function effectively. The Karshaka Congress was planning to intensify its agitation to obtain speedy relief to farmers who were being plagued by huge financial losses and the families of those farmers who had committed suicide after being unable to bear the losses, Mr. Kalpakavadi said.
