Staff Reporter
Off the track: Wagons of the derailed goods train strewn around, and some forced onto the metre-guage track, near Kalluru railway station in Anantapur on Thursday.
ANANTAPUR: A goods train carrying cement from Wadi to Whitefield near Bangalore derailed near Kalluru railway station in the district on Thursday morning, about 35 km from here. As a result, several passenger trains running on the line were either diverted or cancelled. Efforts were on to restore the train traffic on the Gooty-Anantapur route by laying an alternative temporary track where the derailed wagons were strewn all over. No one was injured in the incident and top officials of the Guntakal Division, including Divisional Railway Manager S. Manohar, Additional DRM Kishen Swarup and others were camping at the accident site to oversee the restoration work. Fish plates removed
According to railway authorities, the preliminary examination of the accident pointed towards loosened fish plates which would hold two rails welded together and breakage in welding. While 13 wagons capsized in the accident, another simply derailed and stood intact off the track. The loss could have been much higher had the two train engines pulling the wagons derailed. Along with several wagons the two engines remained intact on the track due to the timely reaction of the driver to apply brakes once he sensed the problem. Trains diverted
Hyderabad Special Correspondent adds: Meanwhile, the South Central Railway diverted and either fully or partially cancelled a few trains following the derailment. Train no. 7603 Kacheguda-Yeswantpur and no. 7604 Yeswantpur-Kacheguda passengers and no. 537 Guntakal-Hindupur passenger, all scheduled to leave on Thursday were fully cancelled. Train no. 434 Guntur-Yeswantpur passenger that left Guntur on Wednesday was terminated at Guntakal and was run back as no. 433 A Guntakal-Guntur passenger, while no. 433 Yeswantpur-Guntakal passenger that left on Thursday was terminated at Dharmavaram to run back as no. 434 A. No. 538 Hindupur-Guntakal passenger that left on Thursday was terminated at Anantapur, to run back as no. 537 A. Services that were diverted include no. 2785 Kacheguda-Bangalore Express of Thursday via Guntakal, Bellary, Rayadrug and Arisikere, while no. 2786 Bangalore-Kacheguda will run on the same diverted route.
