“It’s the first major step to take the criminals head on”
PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry police have entered into an informal understanding with the Superintendents of Police in two neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu for sharing information about criminals wanted for offences here. In the last two days, Inspector General of Police K. Kishan Kumar held talks with the SPs of Villupuram and Cuddalore and discussed modalities for a “joint offensive” against criminals having a base in both Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. “It’s the first major step to take the criminals head on,” Chhaya Sharma, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) told The Hindu. Names given
At the meeting with Superintendent of Police, Villupuram, K. Periaiah, and Superintendent of Police, Cuddalore, Pradip Kumar, Mr. Kumar had handed over names of 24 wanted criminals based in Tamil Nadu, a majority of them in the two districts. Assistance sought
In turn, the Tamil Nadu police sought the assistance of the territorial police to nab culprits wanted for offence in the two districts. The SSP said they would provide a list very soon. It was also decided to appoint nodal officers from both sides to share information about rowdy elements including their photographs, family details, source of income and movement. The nodal officers for the territorial police would be Superintendent of Police (Rural) and Inspector, Special Task Force. The meeting also decided to strengthen about 12 check posts in the two districts and the 14 newly set up ones here. Spurt in crime
Another round of talks between the Inspector General Police and IG North Zone, Tamil Nadu, has been scheduled for the first week of July, according to senior officials. The territorial force initiated the coordinated approach after a spurt in crime in the Union Territory in the last six months.
