ERODE: For the Plus One students of the Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Erode, the new academic year has begun ‘with a breath of fresh air.’

It has nothing to do with chemistry, commerce or computer science but a breathing programme in yoga. Yes, the 550 students of Plus One have undergone a two-day yoga programme, conducted by the Mana Vala Kalai Mandram, sponsored by the SKM group of companies.

In the programme the students are taught simple physical exercises, meditation and kayakalpam, an exercise to boost life force, says the programme coordinator V.M. Venkatachalam. The exercises can be practised at home, and if done regularly will boost the students’ memory power, discipline their life, sooth the mind, besides improving their health, he adds.

The students only seem to acknowledge it. “In the past two days itself I witness a change in me. I love to study, and am studying better with better concentration,” says D. Malini of XI-B. Her friend R. Angelein Prabha says it has helped her get a good sleep. “Prior to attending the programme, my mind was disturbed, which is absent now. I’m able to get good sleep, which helps me study better the next day.”

The teachers, who have seen students of four batches practice yoga, say the change in students is visible and for the better. “The change in discipline is visible. Earlier, we teachers enforced it. But now it is from within,” points out A. Rani Thangam, English faculty and assistant headmistress. The Mandram conducts the programme free of cost to the students of the school and other Government-run schools in the district.
