SP walkout over attack on MLA

Mayawati blames Azam Khan for law and order problem in Jauhar university

SP objects to investigation being handed over to Circle Officer

Speaker, Minister refuse to give direction to Rampur police

LUCKNOW: The Samajwadi Party staged a walkout in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Thursday in protest against the State Government’s refusal to file a case against those responsible for the alleged murderous attack on Samajwadi MLA Mohammed Azam Khan in Rampur two days ago.

The issue concerned the demolition of the boundary wall of Maulana Mohammed Ali Jauhar University in Rampur, followed by the alleged attack on Mr. Khan and the refusal of the police to book the culprits. The issue had figured in the House on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Mayawati’s statement on the Jauhar university episode was read out to the House by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Lalji Verma. In her statement, the Chief Minister debunked Mr. Khan’s allegations and instead pinned the blame on the Samajwadi Party MLA and his supporters for the law and order problem in the university.

The Government’s reply referred to Mr. Khan’s complaints to the Rampur district authorities, dated June 23, June 24 and June 26, that villagers of Aaliaganj had indulged in vandalism, damaged the entrance gate and boundary wall of the university. Mr. Khan had also stated in his complaints that the villagers armed with sharp-edged weapons made an attempt to kill him.

Mr. Khan was blamed for instigating the violence after his supporters beat up some villagers who had entered the university campus in search of fodder.

Dissatisfied with the Government’s reply, the Samajwadi Party member objected to the investigation being handed over to the Circle Officer of Swar. He alleged that the acts of vandalism at the university were masterminded by former Samajwadi MLA from Swar Tanda, Kazim Ali Khan, who resigned from the Samajwadi Party recently and joined the Bahujan Samaj Party. Mr. Khan is the son of the former Congress MP from Rampur, Noor Bano.
