dated June 29, 1957: ‘Apartheid’ in South Africa

The police baton-charged and broke up two torchlight processions of Indians protesting against ‘apartheid’ in Johannesburg on June 26 (as already reported).

A spokesman of the Transvaal Indian Congress said that 15 Indians were injured, including two 15-year-old boys and two girls aged 11 and 13. Two policemen also suffered head injuries.

As the police charged a second procession in the City, the Indians ran down side-streets, pursued by constables. One bespectacled Indian ran up to a police van and challenged the policemen to hit him. “You are killing the people. Why don’t you hit me,” he shouted. His friends dragged him away.

The processions were part of the nation-wide “Day of Demonstrations” called for by non-white associations in protest against racial segregation. About 50 per cent of African employees in Johannesburg were reported to have stayed away from work.
