HYDERABAD: While pothole-filling exercise has begun in various road stretches, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is also considering changing the manner in which it undertakes road carpeting and other civic works. Instead of different wings like town planning, sanitation, engineering, urban forestry and others taking up works at different intervals for improving a road stretch, the job might as well be taken up in one go on a particular extent of the road to complete the restoration job faster. This may also cause less inconvenience to people using the roads, feels Commissioner and Special Officer C.V.S.K. Sarma. “He has asked us to come up with a plan where we can avoid keeping the road under repair for months as one after other wings begin their work. Usually, the debris keeps piling up and each blames the other,” points out a senior official. If a road is to be repaired, all the works like laying of a common duct, stormwater drains, catchment pits, footpaths, road dividers and the likes can be completed in a specific period of time if it was allotted as a single packaged tender, the Commissioner pointed out. “We might not be able to straightaway adopt this method in the core area with heavy traffic but we can take it up on the roads of the erstwhile municipalities,” observed an official. Dr. Sarma is also reportedly considering giving financial powers of Rs. 10 lakh to all zonal commissioners and Rs. 3 lakh for deputy commissioners of circles to hasten the process of funds disbursal. These cheques might be counter signed by the accounts and audit officer concerned in the zones.
