NEW DELHI: A 50-year-old technical officer with the National Physical Laboratory jumped off the fourth floor of Janakpuri District Centre here on Thursday. Ramesh Kohli left home on the pretext of taking a morning walk and then leapt off one of the towers of the District Centre around 8 a.m., the police said. “Mr. Kohli had a history of depression and was being treated for psychiatric disorders at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. The problem aggravated over the past two months and he even stopped attending office. On Thursday, he finally took the extreme step,” said a police officer. He was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. A visiting card of his son who works with ICICI Bank and a mobile phone recovered from his pocket helped the police identify the deceased. Mr. Kohli was a resident of Pratap Nagar on Jail Road. Earlier this month, on June 9, a 22-year-old woman had jumped off the eighth floor of the District Centre’s Jena Tower-1. She was the mother of a one-year-old daughter. Thursday’s is the eighth suicide case reported at the District Centre since 2006. The Delhi Development Authority had put grilles in the balconies of the towers and security had been intensified following a spate of suicides and failed attempts last year. But a police officer said the gap between the bars was wide enough for people to squeeze through.
