Athlete moves High Court
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: An athlete, who represented the country in the Sydney Olympics in 2000, has moved the Madras High Court challenging the non-consideration of his age relaxation plea for selection as Sub-Inspector of Police under the sports quota.
Justice K. Venkataraman, before whom the petition filed by C. Thrugnanadurai came up for admission, issued notice to the Home Secretary and the Director-General of Police, returnable by July 12.
According to the petitioner, the Tamil Nadu Government issued an Order on July 23, 2003, stating that age and educational qualifications shall be relaxed for sportsmen, for whom 10 per cent of the SI vacancies would be reserved.
The benefit was not extended to him. Aged 33 now, he sought relaxation on the ground that he had participated in three field events in the Olympics and won several medals in various national and international events. His plea, however, was rejected by the respondents on June 22.
He prayed for the quashing of the impugned rejection order and a direction to the respondents.
