Thailand wants Indian companies

to set up units

CHENNAI: Even as authorities are planning to speed up the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between India and Thailand, business leaders from both countries have started exploring investment opportunities to facilitate two-way trade.

Thailand Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sawanit Kongsiri, along with a 20 member high-level business delegation, is visiting different parts of the country, including Chennai, to explore business opportunities that might emerge after the signing of the agreement.

Thailand is interested in inviting Indian companies in pharmaceutical and IT sectors to set up units.

Sawanit Kongsiri is being accompanied by Pramon Sutivong, Chairman Board of Trade of Thailand, and Vittaya Praisuwan, Assistant Secretary, Board of Investment of Thailand.

On Friday, they will address the Indian delegates at a seminar on ‘Emerging Opportunities Post FTA: A win-win Partnership.’

Industries Secretary Shaktikanta Das and Tamil Nadu Industrial Guidance and Export Promotion Bureau Director M Velmurugan will highlight the opportunities in the State.

As a follow-up, the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) will send a business delegation to Bangkok on a tour from July 10 to 13.

The delegates will meet representatives of various chambers of commerce, industries and associations to promote trade. “We will be signing an MoU with the Thai Chamber of Commerce during the visit,” said an SICCI official.
