Dutch agriculture mission to visit India

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: An agriculture mission of the Netherlands will visit India in November and tour Punjab, Haryana and Tamil Nadu.

Dutch food processing experts will accompany the mission and Indian entrepreneurs could make the best use of them, said Hans Wolff, Netherlands Counsellor for Agriculture in India. In an interaction with members of the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry here, Mr. Hans Wolff said the Netherlands was the second largest exporter of flowers. It accounted for 25 per cent of the country’s GDP. In floriculture, India could tap the Netherlands expertise.

Mr. Hans Wolff, who toured rural villages in India, found agriculture production declining and groundwater table fast depleting. One reason, he said, was the lack of infrastructure, without which it was difficult for producers to market their produce.

V. Vijay Kumar, chief representative, the Netherlands Business Support Office, said the objective of the interaction was to explore the possibilities of agricultural business between the two countries. As the Netherlands was known for high-tech agriculture, he said, India could benefit a lot from it.
