WASHINGTON: The U.S. Senate failed again on Thursday in a vote to limit debate on an immigration bill that could provide a path to legal status for millions of illegal immigrants in the country. The Senate voted 46 to 53, failing to limit debating on the bill, 14 short of the 60 votes needed to move the bill for final passage. On June 7, the Senate had voted 45 to 50 against limiting debate on the legislation, which was supported by President George W. Bush and would also tighten border security, punish employers for hiring illegal immigrants, establish a merit-based points system for future immigrants, and create a guest worker programme . On Tuesday, the Senate revived the bill, after intensified efforts by the President, but Republican opponents succeeded in delaying consideration of a package of amendments to the bill. — Xinhua
