Back to old ways

The NDA is back to its old ways of tarnishing the reputation of political opponents. It has succeeded in muddying the presidential election by spreading half-truths and rumours about the UPA’s presidential candidate, Pratibha Patil. The BJP, which is leading the pack, should remember that it was responsible for the two biggest communal conflagrations India has witnessed in its post-Independence history — in 1992 and 2002. It has no monopoly on political morality. The NDA rule witnessed many a scam, the defence purchase deals made during and after the Kargil war being the most prominent.

It is clear that the NDA does not have the numbers to get the independent candidate, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, elected. What then is its objective behind bringing the presidential office into disrepute?

P. Vishnudev,
Hyderabad

I couldn’t agree more with the succinct and incisive analysis of the main opposition party (editorial “BJP’s bluster,” June 28). Quiet introspection is something unknown to the BJP, although it goes into a periodic huddle called chintan baithak.

The BJP is running out of ideas and its latest move is to project itself as the champion of women’s rights by announcing that one-third of the party’s posts will be held by them.

T.V. Shankar Narayanan,
Hosur
