Letters to the Editor
The campaigning for the presidential election has reached its lowest level. Both the UPA and the NDA claim that their candidate is the most upright, secular, and non-partisan person. Both the candidates are politicians. While one of them just resigned a constitutional post, another continues to hold a constitutional office. One wonders whether a day will come when parties will observe decorum and decency in politics. The office of the President has been politicised so much that a candidate has to proclaim that she will not be a rubber stamp if elected to power.
M.A. Chandrashekar,
The common man is disturbed by the tumultuous run-up to the presidential election. Irrespective of who is ultimately elected, the politicisation of the highest constitutional office to such a vicious level is dangerous. While it is desirable for the President to be elected by consensus, an electoral contest is only natural in a democracy. The various developments in the past weeks over the selection of candidates, and the actions and reactions of their supporting parties do not augur well for the sanctity of that office.
K.K. Cherian,
The election has exposed political parties’ latent greed for the ceremonial post. All of them have collectively tarnished the country’s image by indulging in politics over the issue.
Sukhwinder Singh,
Abdul Kalam is not in the fray because of uncertainty; Bhairon Singh Shekhawat is in the fray in spite of uncertainty; Pratibha Patil is in the fray because of certainty; and we had a Mahatma who was not in the fray in spite of certainty.
K. Amanullah,
