Telgi sentenced

The 13-year rigorous imprisonment for Abdul Karim Telgi in the multi-crore stamp paper scam should send a strong message to all corrupt politicians and government officials. The judge deserves all praise for slapping a fine of Rs.100 crore, the highest in the country so far, on Telgi. There is no question that those who try to destabilise the economy and the functioning of the state should be severely punished. The judgment is welcome.

M. Devender Singh,
New Delhi

Thirteen-year imprisonment is no punishment considering the enormity of the crime. Telgi must be more than happy. But what about the VIPs, including bureaucrats and politicians, without whose help a scam of such magnitude would have been impossible? They are perhaps enjoying the money they earned with Telgi’s help. It is well known that the scam originated at the Nashik press. Are not those who auctioned the printing machines without dismantling the dyes accountable?

Tusar Kanti Kar,
Howrah
