News Analysis
Confusion arose over the last sentence in “Democrats on course” (Editorial, June 29, 2007), which was “But whatever be the eventual line-up, the 2008 contest for the White House will be one for the Democrats to lose.” A few readers felt that it should have been “… Democrats to gain”. The sentence is right and idiomatic. For example, “This is a contest for the Democrats to lose” means that they are the favourites and unless something extraordinary happens, they can take their victory for granted. >>Jacqueline Park is a woman! In a report “IFJ [International Federation of Journalists] criticises Colombo move to reintroduce defamation laws” (“International” page, June 29, 2007), the references to IFJ Asia-Pacific director Jacqueline Park in the text (six instances) should have been to “her”, “she” and “Ms. Park” respectively and not “his”, “he” and “Mr. Park”, as was published. The heading of a report “Bannerjee Committee submits final report on Godhra carnage” (June 23, 2007) was misleading. It is the Railway Ministry which has submitted a copy of the final report of the Bannerjee Committee to the Gujarat High Court. The Justice U.C. Bannerjee Committee submitted its final report to the Railway Ministry on March 3, 2006. The Committee’s tenure ended on March 31, 2006. The report could not be tabled in the Parliament till now because of a stay order from the Gujarat High Court, based on a PIL. In a report “Sachin Tendulkar falls short of a hundred” (“Sport”, June 27, 2007), a report on the India-South Africa cricket match in Ireland, a sentence was: “They [Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid] were also held up by the steady medium pace of Vernon Philander, making his debut and looking as if he might be the new Shaun Pollock.” South Africa’s Vernon Philander did not make his debut against India, but against Ireland in the earlier match. The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “Barking deer at [Arignar Anna Zoological Park] Vandalur dear to visitors” (Chennai city, June 28, 2007, page 4) was: “Togetherness: A newborn barking deer calf with its mother at the Vandalur Zoo.” The barking deer is a small deer species and its young one is called a fawn. However, the young of large deer and antelopes can be called a calf.It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
