KOCHI: Chennai’s Vishnu Prasanna celebrated his first major triumph when he won the 19th Cusat Open all-India FIDE-rated chess tournament with a round to spare here on Friday. The 18-year-old second year B.Com student of Loyola College has nine points from 10 rounds, a full point advantage over his closest chasers. “Vishnu has won the tournament. Even if he loses the last round, the position will not change. He has a better progressive score,” said the tournament’s chief arbiter M. Ephrame. The results (10th round): Vishnu Prasanna (TN, 9) drew with Saptarshi Roy (WB, 7.5); Muralidharan (Ker, 8) bt Shanmuganathan (TN, 7); Sidharth (TN, 8) bt Suresh Kumar (ICF, 7); Santu Mondal (WB, 7) lost to Laxman (TN, 7.5). Alex Thomas (Ker, 6.5) lost to Vinoth Kumar (TN, 7.5); Anilkumar (Ker, 6.5) bt Nimmy George (Ker, 6.5); Venkatesh (TN, 7) drew with Rupankar Nath (WB, 7); Santosh Kumar (TN, 6.5) lost to Kunal (TN, 7.5); Haribalu (TN, 7.5) bt Haridas (Ker, 6.5); Naveen Hegde (Kar, 7) bt Chakravarthi (AP, 6). Ninth round: Rupankar lost to Vishnu Prasanna; Suresh Kumar drew with Muralidharan; Saptarshi Roy bt Avinash Sethi; Kunal drew with Vinoth Kumar.
