Coimbatore: Delhi’s Raj Randhawa played precision golf while under pressure to emerge champion of the LG Coimbatore amateur golf championship for the GKD Memorial Gold Cup at the Coimbatore Golf Club course here on Friday.

Ahead by just a stroke over both Simarjeet Singh and Moin Malak, Randhawa teed off rather nervously from the first box and picked up pace midway through to card a one-over 73 for the day and an overall tally of 299 for the Cup. Incidentally, the Coimbatore leg turned out to be Randhawa’s last as an amateur.

Lucky course

“The Coimbatore course is a pretty lucky one for me. It was here that I first won as a junior and now my last as an amateur,” said Randhawa.

“Given the tough conditions and the lead margin the title could have gone either way, but I was just concentrating on my game. In fact, I never really looked at the leaderboard, except on the 13th,” he added.

Gagan Verma surprised everybody by bringing in the day’s best card of level par 72 under tough conditions.

The Indian Oil golfer, with a tournament tally of 303, finished for the second spot along with ONGC’s Vikram Rana, who shot a 75.

K. Prabagaran and Mithun Perrera from Sri Lanka also came up with creditable performances. The former, who is sponsored by the Coimbatore Golf Club, wrested the fourth spot with a one-over 73, while the latter shot a 74 to share the fifth spot with OIL India’s Simarjeet Singh at 80.

R. Venkatrangappan, the Whole Time Director of Lakshmi Machine Works, gave away the prizes. K. Rajagopal, President, Coimbatore Golf Club, was also present.

The scores (after 72 holes):

299-Raj Randhawa (75, 74, 77, 73); 303-Gagan Verma (72, 79, 80, 72), Vikram Rana (78, 72, 78, 75); 305-K Prabagaran (76, 79, 77, 73); 307-Mithun Perera (76, 77, 80, 74), Simarjeet Singh (73, 79, 75, 80); 308-Abhishek Jha (76, 77, 81, 74); 3 11- Moin Malak (74, 76, 77, 84); 312-Arshdeep Tiwana (75, 82, 80, 75); 313-Amanjyot Singh (81, 76, 79, 77), Samaresh Sardar (75, 77, 78, 83); 314-Karan Vasudeva (79, 82, 77, 76), Jasjeet Singh (79,78,77,80); 316-Lt Col.
