Karthik is cricketer of the year

CHENNAI: Dinesh Karthik was adjudged the cricketer of the year 2006-07 for the Bishnuram Medhi Trophy during the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association’s 77th Annual Day at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here on Friday.

Karthik, who is with the Indian team in Ireland, couldn’t attend the function. Off-spinner R. Ashwin won the awards for consistent performance in the Ranji Trophy (Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy Endowment), best bowler in the Ranji Trophy (V. Jagannathan Memorial Trophy), and collegiate cricketer of the year (Baliah Memorial Trophy).

Chief guest Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, Additional Secretary to Government, Finance Department, complimented the structure and the professionalism of the TNCA. Drawing from his experience in the districts, Dr. Radhakrishnan spoke of how cricket had been used in tsunami relief and rehabilitation.

TNCA president N. Srinivasan, in his welcome address, congratulated the Tamil Nadu team for winning the inaugural Twenty20 championship. He called on the side to show greater resolve to improve its Ranji Trophy performance.
