NEW DELHI: K. Sasikiran drew with Romanian Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu to remain in the joint last spot after the 10th and penultimate round of the Aerosvit chess tournament at Foros, Ukraine, on Thursday. Nisipeanu looked better off in the Caro Kann game with some early aggression putting Sasikiran on the defensive. But once Sasikiran simplified the position, the draw was agreed in 33 moves. In the day’s best game, Vassily Ivanchuk displayed his class against Alexei Shirov and emerged victorious with black pieces in 34 moves. Before taking the sole lead at seven points, Ivanchuk sacrificed a knight for two pawns and unleashed a lethal kingside attack. The results (10th round): Nisipeanu (Rom, 4) drew with K. Sasikiran (4); Sergey Karjakin (Ukr, 6.5) drew with Alexander Onischuk (USA, 5); Peter Svidler (Rus, 5.5) bt Dmitry Jakovenko (Rus, 4); Shirov (Esp, 5.5) lost to Ivanchuk (Ukr, 7); Lenier Dominguez Perez (Cub, 5) drew with Pavel Eljanov (Ukr, 4); Loek van Wely (Ned, 5) drew with Sergei Rublevsky (Rus, 4.5).
