BANGALORE: The State Government on Friday decided to put off the compulsory enforcement of speed governor rule for all new transport vehicles by six months. The rule, scheduled to be enforced from July 1, will now be enforced from January 1, 2008. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Minister for Transport N. Cheluvarayaswamy. Various transport associations, including that of truck operators, tourist taxi operators and school-bus operators had threatened a State-wide indefinite strike from July 1 if the Government went ahead with the enforcement. The order making speed governors compulsory for transport vehicles was issued in December 2005 and the Government was enforcing it in phases on different categories of vehicles. While newly registered maxicabs, school vans, private service vehicles and private stage carriages were supposed to install speed governors from December 1, 2006, speed governor was made compulsory for all categories of newly registered transport vehicles including contract carriages, all-India tourist buses and goods vehicles from May 1, 2007.The May 1, 2007 deadline was extended to July 1, which on Friday was further extended to January 1, 2008. Transport vehicles that are already registered are required to install speed governors by April 30, 2008. A senior official of the Transport Department said that the decision to put off the enforcement was taken to avoid inconvenience to people by the proposed strike as well as to give more time to vehicle owners to comply with the rule.
