Rs.85 lakh worth rice seized

Kakinada: Special teams of the Civil Supplies Department seized Rs.85 lakh worth rice that was allegedly being diverted from the Food-for-Work programme stock for export. Following a tip-off, raids were conducted on various godowns in the port area and also in other parts of the town till late Thursday night and stocks that include 330 MTs of polished rice, 35 MTs of Food-for-Work rice and 600 MTs of broken rice were seized and the godown sealed.
District supply officer P. D. Prakasa Rao said here on Friday that they seized two lorries laden with Food-for-Work rice procured from the rice mills in Krishna district and arrested the drivers .He said the rice belonged to a Delhi-based major rice exporters company and cases were booked against them and also the local agent. The local Manager of the export company was also arrested.
