THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government is working on an insurance scheme that would offer cover for both crops and farmers, Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Rathnakaran told the Assembly on Friday. Replying to a submission by K.C. Joseph (Congress), the Minister said the Government has invited nationalised insurance companies to give shape to the insurance scheme and hoped that the Government would be able to announce the new insurance scheme shortly. The Government is contemplating the new scheme because the existing crop insurance schemes of the Central and State Governments do not have any reference to the cost of production, he said. Under the national crop insurance scheme, only six crops are eligible for compensation in the event of calamities or large-scale destruction owing to pest infestation. User fee
Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas told V. Sivankutty (CPI-M) that the Government would see if the user charges being realised at RTO offices for various computerised services could be brought down so as to lessen the burden on vehicle owners. The user charges were introduced from June 16 to make up the expenditure incurred for computerisation of various services at a cost of Rs.47.97 crore.
