CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted interim bail to the Chief of the Dera Sacha Sauda, Baba Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim, till August 6. The godman, who has been booked by the Punjab Police for hurting religious sentiments, has been asked to surrender his passport. The orders were passed by Justice L.N. Mittal, who accepted the petition filed by the Dera that their sect chief was being involved in a false and politically motivated case. The counsel had argued that the Dera chief had done nothing with an intention to hurt religious feelings of Sikhs. He also sought the quashing of the order passed by a court in Bathinda, which had issued non-bailable warrants against the Dera chief, to be returned by July 1. The reprieve to the Dera Chief from the High Court comes immediately after the Punjab government had given its consent to arrest him. The Dera’s administration has also sought the intervention of the President, to stop the “persecution” of the “Premis” (followers) and withdrawal of the “false case” against the Baba.
