CHENNAI: The railway authorities are awaiting clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety for the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) line between Tiruvanmiyur and Velachery, Southern Railway general manager Thomas Varghese, said told presspersons here on Friday. Presspersons drew the attention of the general manager to problems faced by suburban commuters, particularly between Chennai and Gummidipoondi. Chief operations manager Abraham Jacob said that after a review, it had now been proposed to operate four additional pairs of services to Tiruvallur and six additional EMU services to Gummidipoondi. A railway press release later said the additional EMUs would be operated from July 1. Six services (three pairs each way) would be extended from Gummidipoondi to Sulurpet. On Gummidipoondi services, he said there was no dedicated line for EMUs. In response to demand from passengers residing beyond Avadi, it has been proposed to provide additional pairs of EMU trains from July 1 without cutting services elsewhere. Three additional pairs of services to Arakkonam and one extra pair to Tiruttani would be operated. Weekday services would be maintained on Saturdays and Sundays in Chennai Central-Tiruvallur section. Four pairs of new services will be introduced in the Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu section. Three pairs of services from Chengalpattu to Tambaram will be extended to Chennai Beach.
