Men should also be aware of domestic violence laws: Kanimozhi

Staff Reporter

ERODE: Men should be as much aware of laws on domestic violence as women, K. Kanimozhi, Member of Parliament, has said.

Speaking at a function organised on laws on violence against women at the Kongu Arts and Science College here on Friday, she said, “Men need to be enlightened so that violence comes down. The aim, therefore, should be to educate men as well.”

She clarified that the law was neither against men nor intended to be used against them alone. “The law is to protect women from violence and any person, be it woman or man, who unleashes cruelty, in action as well as words, against women should be punished.”

Ms. Kanimozhi questioned the deep-rooted notion of men being women’s guardians. “Why do men take it upon themselves to protect women? This very thought restricts women’s freedom and burdens them as well,” she said and wanted women to enjoy the liberty of deciding their future.

‘Leave it to us’

“Men always decide what women should do, be it a girl’s choice of subjects, or a young woman’s groom or a wife’s preferences and tastes,” she pointed out and suggested men that they off-load the ‘responsibility’ so that both men and women are at peace with each other.

“Leave it to us, we’ll decide,” she added.

Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan said laws alone would not bring justice to women.

“Law is only a tool; what is required is a change in attitude in both men and women.” She said laws were like a double-edged weapon. It should be used only for protecting women and not taking revenge on men.

Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan said the State had made a great stride in women’s development, thanks to the social and political revolution that took place in the early and middle decades of the last century.
