PROTEST: CPI cadres stage a demonstration seeking maintenance of law and order in Puducherry on Saturday.
Puducherry: Volunteers of the Communist party of India staged demonstrations at six places in Puducherry on Saturday urging the police to take stern action against criminals holding the people to ransom. Member of the National Council of the party R.Viswanathan, MLA, told newsmen later that there had been unchecked rise in number of murders and robberies since last few months. People were in grip of fear, as incidents were taking place in broad daylight. He said that the mercenaries in Puducherry were engaged by criminals from neighbouring States. The police had full details of the offenders, but were not able to take stern action. Mr. Viswanathan said that, despite repeated representations to the Government and to the police, nothing had been done so far. There should be a multi-pronged approach to curb crimes. Secretary of the party N. Kalainathan, MLA, headed a demonstration in the town limits. Demonstrations were held in Ariyankuppam, Bahoor, Villianoor and a few other blocks. There should be review of the steps taken by the police all these months and there should be a thorough toning up of the machinery as the influx of criminals from other States had been on the increase.
