Puducherry: A hurriedly-convened meeting of the Cabinet held under Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Saturday reviewed the possible impact of the Value Added Tax (VAT) coming into force in the Union Territory on July 1. An informed source told The Hindu that the meeting listed commodities for which the proposed VAT needed to be reduced or rescheduled. The Cabinet recommendations had since been sent by fax to Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi, who is away in Arunachal Pradesh. The other Ministers, who attended the meeting, were Industries Minister V. Vaithilingam, Health Minister E. Valsaraj, Local Administration Minister Malladi Krishna Rao, Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan and Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy. The VAT will come into force as per the ordinance the Lt. Governor promulgated on June 2 from Sunday. There were, in the meanwhile, several representations from merchants and traders. One of the Ministers told The Hindu that the VAT as such would come to force and the Government wanted to have a comparative analysis of the pattern of taxes envisaged through the ordinance and the one prevailing in neighbouring Sta tes.
