SRINAGAR: The two-month-long pilgrimage to the holy cave of Amarnath, which was scheduled to begin on Saturday, was suspended in the wake of inclement weather conditions. The authorities are hoping to give a go-ahead on Sunday in case these conditions improved.

As incessant rain lashed the Kashmir valley leading to chilly weather conditions in the higher reaches around the Amarnath cave, situated in the Pahalgam woods, the authorities had no option but to suspend the scheduled pilgrimage. However, thousands of devotees who had started their journey from various parts of country have already reached the two base camps of Baltal (Sonmarg) and Nunwan (Pahalgam). Many more are in Jammu and have been asked to wait for the next announcement. “The yatra has been suspended and the Amarnath Shrine Board along with the local administration will review the situation tomorrow and if conditions improve we may allow it,” Madan Mantoo, spokesman of the Amarnath Shrine Board told The Hindu< /em>. He said over 4,000 pilgrims were in Baltal and nearly 3,000 in Nunwan. “But adequate arrangements have been made for their stay,” he said.

Continuous rain for the last two days has made the Pahalgam as well as Baltal tracks slippery and dangerous for trekking. Pilgrims generally walk the distance from Baltal and Pahalgam to the cave shrine.

Patil to fly today

Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who is on a two-day visit to Kashmir ,took stock of the situation at a high-level meeting on Saturday. He reviewed fool-proof security arrangements for the yatra. Mr. Patil is scheduled to fly to the Amarnath cave on Sunday along with Governor S.K. Sinha, who is also the chairman of the Shrine Board.
