Yechury briefs Singapore leaders

P.S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury on Saturday concluded a five-day visit to the City-State under its Distinguished Visitors Programme.

The first non-governmental communist leader to be invited under the programme, Mr. Yechury briefed the Singapore leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister S. Jayakumar and Foreign Minister George Yeo, on India’s current political situation and foreign policy trends. He later indicated that the discussions covered areas such as Singapore’s investment focus, India-China engagement, the current state of negotiations between New Delhi and Washington for civil nuclear energy cooperation, the India-China-Russia framework of dialogue and the CPI (M)’s sustained electoral record in West Bengal and elsewhere.

He described his interactions with the Singapore leaders as “a very interesting and useful experience.”
