Mumbai: Mr. Sharad Pawar will succeed David Morgan as president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2010. In a span of six years in cricket administration as the president of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Pawar has managed to take the centre stage of world cricket. On the face of it Pawar’s rise has to be deemed remarkable. Once the primary objective was accomplished — to take control of the reins of the BCCI the next step was to aim for the ICC presidentship. It’s a well-calculated move on Pawar’s part to lead the ICC on the back of the Asian bloc and South Africa and Zimbabwe’s support. This ensured that only two men were in the race for the top job of the ICC. Stalemate
A stalemate ensued though, following the Pawar supporters’ inability to bring into its fold a seventh Test playing nation (full member of the ICC) — as per rules and regulations stipulated by the ICC. The matter was then referred to the ICC’s governance review committee comprising Australia’s Creagh O’Connor (chairman), Malaysia’s Tunku Imran and Zimbabwe’s Peter Chingoka who at their meeting in Cape Town concluded that since only Pawar and Morgan were in the fray they be given option to decide on who should succeed South Africa’a Mali in June 2008. It was following a binding resolution moved by Cricket Australia’s Creagh O’ Connor at the ICC executive board meeting in London — accepted by Mr. Pawar and Mr. Morgan an amicable settlement to a thorny issue was arrived at with England and Wales Cricket Board’s Morgan chosen to succeed Mali in 2008 and Pawar to take over the mantle of ICC presidentship in 2010. The EB’s resolution was adopted at the ICC AGM on Friday. — Special Correspondent
