Madurai: The cloud of uncertainty over the seventh National Federation Cup Junior Athletic championship to be held here from July 1 remained still. On the eve of the meet, the venue has been shifted to the Armed Reserve ground, as the original venue, MGR Race Course Stadium, is not available. The two-day meet will be organised by the Madurai District Athletic Association under the auspices of Tamil Nadu Athletic Association. Nearly 500 top junior athletes (under-20) from 23 States will have an opportunity to showcase their talent. The meet has attained significance as the team for the junior Asian Track and Field and Commonwealth Games will be selected during this meet. Athletes like Hemanth Kirulkar, L. Raj, Trinath, Karthick, Krish Beethovan and Shilpa will be seen in action. In the past, host Tamil Nadu had won the title on four occasions, while Kerala had won twice. The race for the title this time also is expected to be between these teams, with Karnataka joining them, likely. While detailing the features of the competition, Neelasivalingasamy, Secretary, TNAA, expressed the gratitude of Tamilnadu Mercantile Bank which has come forward to support the event. The opening ceremony will be held at 3.30 p.m. on July 1. W.I. Davaram, President, TNAA, will inaugurate the championship. The valedictory function will be held at 5 p.m. on July 2.
