No to ‘Jarawa-viewing’ trips
Mumbai: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration has issued a warning against organising trips for tourists to view the Jarawas, pointing out that it is violation of an order by the Supreme Court aimed to protect the vulnerable tribe. Violation of the order could invite contempt of court charges, Survival, a non-governmental organisation, said here.
The warning has been issued to hoteliers, tour operators, taxi drivers and others who are known to organise such trips, it said.
The court ordered that the Jarawas, among other tribes, should be protected from any contact with mainstream society, to minimise exposure to germs and diseases. The Jarawas had resisted all contact with settlers on the islands until 1998.
“We welcome efforts to crack down on those who enter Jarawa land without their permission,” Survival director Stephen Corry said. “The Jarawas should not be treated as a tourist attraction.” — PTI
