Malnad rivers in spate

CHIKMAGALUR: All rivers in the Malnad region, including the Tunga and Bhadra, are in spate as heavy rain accompanied by gusty wind continued to lash Chikmagalur district on Saturday.

Traffic on Jayapura-Balehole road has been disrupted with a stream flowing above a bridge. A bridge near Gendehalli has been washed away.

Many tanks in the Malnad region are full. A canal of a tank near Gonibeedu in Mudigere taluk has breached inundating the low-lying areas. Officials of the Minor Irrigation Department have taken up emergency repair work.

A large number of arecanut palms and trees have been uprooted in Koppa and Sringeri taluks. Kottigehara in Mudigere taluk received 366 mm of rain on Friday, the highest in the district. Mudigere received 239 mm. rainfall, Sringeri 205 mm, Koppa 171 mm, Jayapura 186 mm, Balehonnur 96 mm, Aldur 74 mm, and Chikmagalur 23 mm
