Good response to TDP-Left bandh

Staff Reporter

Protest against shortage of seed

ANANTAPUR: A near total bandh was observed in the district on Saturday in response to the call given by Telugu Desam Party and two Left parties, separately, protesting the Government’s inability to supply subsidised seed groundnut properly to the farmers. As a result, normal life was affected for the better part of the day.

According to the information reaching here, the APSRTC has kept its services off the road well beyond afternoon and the services were resumed from 2 p.m. in some areas and later in other areas. All commercial establishments, banks, Central Government offices, cinema halls and hotels remained closed till evening.

Schools and colleges started functioning normally in the morning but the activists of TDP, CPI and CPI (M) forced their closure from 10 a.m. State Government offices functioned partially as they were also forced to close in the morning. But, some staff continued work later.

Traffic disrupted

In Kodikonda check-post, the TDP activists led by former minister N. Kistappa blocked the NH-7 for about two hours as part of the bandh. Vehicular traffic was disrupted during the period and a large number of vehicles were stranded on the highway. In Hindupur, Anantapur, Kalyanadurg and several other places protests were taken out with the effigies of Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy. Speaking at different places, the leaders of TDP, CPI and CPI (M) blamed the minister for the problems being experienced in seed supply.

At least the response of the people to the bandh call should open the eyes of the Government on the seed problem, they said and demanded supply of sufficient quantity of seed to all the farmers.
