JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government on Saturday appointed senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer D. C. Samant as the new State Chief Secretary, succeeding Anil Vaish, whose extended term has ended. Mr. Samant, who was Additional Chief Secretary in charge of Public Works and Public Health Engineering Departments and the Indira Gandhi Canal Project, took the charge from Mr. Vaish at a simple ceremony in the State Secretariat here. Mr. Vaish, who was to retire last month, remained in office till Saturday following a brief extension of his term in view of the recent Gujjar agitation in the State. However, the Centre did not accept the State Government’s request to extend his term by three moths. An IAS officer of the 1972 batch, Mr. Samant has served the Central Government as Additional Secretary in the Union Water Resources Ministry and Joint Secretary, Heavy Industries. He was earlier Chairman of the Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam and Rajasthan State industrial Development and Investment Corporation. He also served as Commissioner in the Commercial Taxes Department.
