The movement is launched by the CII in 2002 IIM and IIT students are among its members
HYDERABAD: Call it corporate social responsibility or co-opting the underprivileged, the Young Indians (Yi), a movement launched in 2002 by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) to “integrate the voice of young Indians”, is gearing up in a big way to give something back to the society. Revealing the plans to extend Yi’s Akshara Learning Resource Centres to 100 underprivileged or Government schools across the country by the end of the year, its National Chairman Rajan R. Navani said on Saturday that 16-20 such schools will be from the State. As of now, only two schools in the State – namely, United Public School and Boys Town School, both in Hyderabad, have the resource centres. The schools chosen under the programme will be given ‘Akshara kits’, aimed to develop the IQ of the students and help them learn better. Sharing the organisation’s plans for future, Mr. Rajan said the aim is to engage 100,000 young Indians by 2010 in its drive towards nation-building. “We are encouraging students from educational institutions across the country to join Young Indians and participate in social development and knowledge dissemination programmes,” he said. The 3000-strong Yi’s student brigade includes young people from prestigious institutes such as the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, he said. Through its tie up with Livelihood Advancement Business School (LABS) of Dr. Reddy’s Foundation, Yi is aims to provide training and employment opportunities to 3,000 deserving youngsters by the year-end and to 10,000 by 2010. About 100 young people are targeted to be trained under its Innovative Entrepreneurs programme in the current year. Yi’s other plans will include solid waste management projects, to be taken up at Indore, Kochi and Mumbai, networking of farmers to enable sharing of ideas and resources.
