Rally will start at 3 p.m. from Munroe Statue and proceed via Anna Salai and Wallajah Road to State Guest House
CHENNAI: The City Traffic Police have announced traffic diversions on Sunday, in view the women’s rally being organised by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its allies to mobilise support for the UPA-Left Presidential candidate, Pratiba Patil. The rally is expected to start at 3 p.m. from the Munroe Statue and proceed via Anna Salai and Wallajah Road to the State Guest House. Vehicles carrying volunteers coming along Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), will be allowed to turn right at the junction of Sardar Patel Road–OMR and move towards Kamarajar Salai through Sardar Patel Road, Greenways Road and turn right at the South Canal Junction-Foreshore Estate Bypass Road and move towards service road behind Light House, a release from the traffic police said. After the volunteers disembark near the War Memorial, the vehicles will proceed to parking lots earmarked for them. Once the parking lots on Island Grounds and the PWD Ground opposite the Secretariat get filled , the remaining vehicles will be parked on Canal Road and at the MRTS railway station, Chepauk, Queen Mary’s College, Lady Wellington College and the MRTS station at Chintadripet. Vehicles coming on East Coast Road will be diverted at the Akkarai checkpost to join OMR at Sholinganallur. From there they will follow vehicles already passing through OMR, the release added. Vehicles carrying volunteers coming on GST Road will be diverted at the junction of Peerkankaranai–Mudichur Road and go through the Tambaram–Velachery Road up to Vijayanagaram bus terminus, Velachery, and join other vehicles at the SRP Tools junction on OMR. After volunteers disembark at Seerani Arangam, the vehicles will reach the allotted parking lots on the corridor. Once the parking lost on Kamarajar Salai is full, the vehicles will be diverted at the Irumbuliyur Bridge to proceed via Maduravoyal bypass, Anna Arch, Ega junction and Central Light Point. They will turn left on Mint Street before coming to the Memorial Hall, where the volunteers will alight. Vehicles coming on NH 4 from the Kancheepuram side will proceed straight towards the Memorial Hall point through Maduravoyal and Anna Arch. Vehicles on the Chennai–Tiruvallur High Road will touch the Wheels India point and pass through Konnur High Road, Otteri Bridge, Sydenhams Road, Perambur Barracks Road, Doveton, Hunters Road and Choolai High Road to reach Kannappar Thidal parking and alighting points. Vehicles coming on Grand Northern Trunk Road will proceed via Moolakadai, Erukenchery High Road, Vyasarpadi, Moolakothalam junction, Basin Bridge Road, Mint junction, Old Jail Road, Royapuram Bridge, Rajaji Salai, RBI Subway, South Port Trust, Spring Heaven Road and reach the parking lot at Port Trust 7th Gate. The release added that restrictions would be imposed on a few roads in the city depending upon the movement of VVIPs. Efforts were being made to provide links to various parts of the city without the traffic being affected.
