100 huts destroyed

WHAT REMAINS? A woman salvaging the remains in a hut that was gutted in Saidapet on Saturday.

CHENNAI: Nearly 100 huts were destroyed in a fire that broke out in Aathma Nagar near Maraimalai Adigal Bridge in Saidapet in the wee hours of Saturday.

However, no one was injured in the mishap.

According to Fire and Rescue Services, the fire call was received around 2.45 a.m. and a dozen tenders besides a few Metrowater tankers were pressed into service. The tenders battled for over two hours to put out the fire.

An electrical short-circuit in one of the houses could have caused the fire, said the authorities.
